I Grind My Teeth at Night: Is That Why My Jaw Hurts in the Morning?

grimacing in pain while asleepYou wake up, open your mouth, and there it is again. That ache through the jaw. Maybe it clicks when you chew breakfast. Maybe the headache was already there before you got out of bed.

Dr. Wipperman sees this constantly at Ballas Chiropractic & Family Wellness: jaws that have been working all night while the person sleeping never knew it. Grinding. Clenching. Hours of pressure on the temporomandibular joint, and no memory of any of it in the morning.

“A lot of people don’t realize how much they’re clenching or grinding their teeth until the jaw starts to hurt.” — Dr. David Wipperman

Why Your Jaw May Be Working Overtime at Night

Stress doesn’t clock out when you fall asleep. It follows you in, and the jaw is often where it lands. Some people wake up sore because the muscles around the joint have been locked tight for hours. Others get headaches. Facial tension. A clicking sound that wasn’t there last year. Even ringing in the ears, which surprises most patients when they hear it can be connected. Then there’s what happens during the day: the gum chewing, the tough foods, the third or fourth cup of coffee. All of it adds pressure to a joint that’s already working overtime.

When It’s Not Just About Grinding

Grinding is only part of what Dr. Wipperman looks at. How is the jaw actually moving? Is inflammation part of the picture? Sometimes he uses surface electromyography to measure muscle tension or infrared thermography to see where inflammation shows up. What comes next depends on what he finds: a specific, gentle adjustment to restore normal jaw mobility, targeted stretches, massage techniques, changes to daily habits, or a mouth splint. Not every case looks the same, so why treat it like it does?

A Few Habits Worth Watching

Start paying attention to when you clench. Driving. Working. Concentrating on something hard. Small changes help: less gum, less caffeine if it’s leaving you tense, easing up on foods that make your jaw work overtime.
