The Importance of Choline in Pregnancy and Lactation

eggs in persons palmFor decades, to support neurological development in growing babies in the womb and even into childhood, health practitioners have advocated for mothers to incorporate essential fatty acid supplementation (such as DHA) during pregnancy. More recently, choline has been added to the list of micronutrients that are beneficial for neurological development both in pregnancy and during lactation.

Choline is an essential nutrient that is naturally present in some foods and available as a dietary supplement. Choline is a source of methyl groups needed for many steps in metabolism. The body needs choline to synthesize phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin, two major phospholipids vital for cell membranes. Egg yolks are the top source of the most concentration of choline in food. Most people do not get adequate amount of choline in their diet, especially pregnant and lactating women.

Pregnancy and lactation draw choline out of the maternal blood in order to provide for the fetus or infant. This means supplementation of choline is essential for those who may become pregnant. It will ensure optimal health of organs for the mother and for the developing child, supporting the neurological system in structure and function.
